In late 2020, the University of Arizona acquired Ashford University, an online for-profit, and rebranded it as University of Arizona Global Campus, or UAGC. The University of Arkansas System isn’t the only public institution that’s considered these types of deals. Taking a page from other public playbooks? “You’re also acquiring a lot of baggage, both in terms of administrative practices that used to be and should be abhorrent to a legitimate higher ed entity, such as over-the-top sales tactics and lesser admissions requirements and setting people up for obtaining a worthless degree,” Nassirian said. But it also would come at a cost, said Barmak Nassirian, vice president for higher education policy at Veterans Education Success, an advocacy group. That may be pushing the firm that owns University of Phoenix to hand off the institution to someone else.Īcquiring the for-profit would give the University of Arkansas System access to the sophisticated infrastructure it has built over the years. “This is just a nasty, difficult business that is likely to get even more difficult as a for profit,” said Phil Hill, partner at ed tech consultancy MindWires. The Biden administration has pledged to crack down on for-profits and has tightened a slew of policies and regulations governing the sector - and more changes are looming. Moreover, the University of Phoenix will likely face more scrutiny down the road. According to federal data, its eight-year graduation rate hovers between 27% and 51%. While the university has touted recent gains in the share of first-time, full-time students enrolled in bachelor’s programs who return the next year, it’s seen graduation rates decline for certain groups of students. “UOPX has redoubled its commitment to innovation in delivering career-relevant education to working adults and nontraditional students.” “University of Phoenix is not the same university today that it was 10 years ago,” Andrea Smiley, the institution’s vice president for public relations, said in an email. That’s included plans to shutter all of but one of its physical campuses, in Phoenix. In recent years, University of Phoenix has been attempting to rebuild its reputation and streamline operations, according to higher education experts. It accused the university of enticing students to enroll through misleading ads promising them job opportunities with high-profile companies such as Twitter and Microsoft. In one of the biggest cases, the University of Phoenix agreed to pay $191 million in 2019 to settle a complaint made by the Federal Trade Commission. Some higher education experts are skeptical of the potential acquisition, raising doubts about whether system officials could reform a university that’s frequently been accused of deceiving students, using aggressive recruiting tactics, and violating federal and state law. “To see them potentially not just sell the university part of the business - but the entire enterprise - I think is quite a summary for the fortunes of for-profit higher ed.” “University of Phoenix is the poster child for the for-profit higher education industry,” said Michael Horn, author of “Choosing College” and other books about education. Today, the college enrolls fewer than 100,000 students. The University of Phoenix once dominated the online college market, with enrollment peaking at more than 470,000 students. These events have vastly reduced the institution’s profile. The University of Phoenix has also faced numerous charges that it misled students. The potential deal illuminates how much the for-profit sector has changed over the past decade as it’s dealt with a regulatory crackdown, sudden closures of several high-profile colleges and increasing competition from nonprofit colleges. Neither the university nor the system said how much the potential acquisition would cost, but an anonymous source told the Arkansas Times, which first reported the news, that one estimate was between $500 million and $700 million. “As the state’s leader in postsecondary education, we feel an obligation to consider any opportunity that has the potential to both improve educational attainment and secure new resources to support our campuses, divisions and units,” Hinkel said in an email.Ī University of Phoenix spokesperson also confirmed the discussions. The discussions follow the system’s move in 2021 to purchase Grantham University, then a for-profit, to build out its online operations. Hinkel said the system has been exploring ways to expand its online footprint and further its mission of providing an affordable education.

It falls to you to crush skulls with your hammer, a slow but powerful weapon. Ghost-like Gasfellas will attempt to beat you to a pulp, slithering Scumbags will spit acidic saliva at you, and giant armored frogs called Lunkheads will pounce upon you. Apart from other people, many wild animals and maddened beasts have survived doomsday. You and the old man are not alone in this world. His background on levels gives them even more depth and keeps you wanting to explore further to see and hear about other such wonders. The man's raspy old voice adds a facet to Bastion that makes it stand out, defining it. If you fall off the edge of the terrain at the beginning of the game, the narrator will say, “.And just like that, he falls to his death.” When you reappear, he'll laugh heartily and say, “Just kidding.” During other tense scenes and trials, he'll speak of how you're nearly defeated, how you fought hard to kill those windbags, how the peckers came at you en masse. Some of his narration goes beyond that to commenting on some of your basic actions. Each level has a background that he sheds light on, and others have inhabitants that he'll tell you about. It's through his narration that we hear much of the story. You know this because he narrates the game as you creep from place to place. The old man from the Bastion knows your every move. The treat doesn't stop at the visual end. A romantic path rises from the void complete with gorgeously tiled roads and an enchanted-garden-like landscape. Swamps spring up with murky waters and grass taller than your character. Even though the levels consist of little more than a littered pathway, they are full of life and wonder. Hell, just about everything can be destroyed. It's one sweetened by the colorful graphics and lush environments that feature many destructible pieces like rocks, barrels, certain walls. No matter how many times you've seen it, watching a level build right before you is an amazing experience. Traversing each level is an experience in itself. Outside the Bastion are the remnants of the world. You can't build these helpful places without picking up cores or shards, and you can't snag any of those without visiting levels. Need some items? Then make a lost-and-found. Building a distillery gives you access to different spirits that boost your stats or give you special passive enhancements, or creating a forge allows you to upgrade your weaponry. Adding these cores will allow you to erect various buildings that aid you in your quest. Its purposes are unknown, but living there is an old man who gives you direction that will allow you to build and improve the Bastion by adding cores to a console at its center. You, one of the few survivors, have made your way to a place called the Bastion. It's that Bastion pieces together all of the different facets and elements, both the gameplay and the artsy atmosphere, to create something genuine, beautiful and fun.Īs I touched on earlier, the world has ended. There have been dozens, maybe even hundreds, of isometric perspective games where the core gameplay consists of mashing the attack button to crush large crowds of enemies and collect money to further yourself. It's not that the gameplay is anything new. Now I just need to keep my wife from knowing. I had fallen in love with Bastion, and that's something I haven't done with a game in a long time. When I saw pieces of the ground rising up from a void below me form the steps I would be taking, took in the vibrant colors that felt counterintuitive in a game about the end of the world, and crashed my way through miles of destructible environments, I knew what that sensation was. The instant I started up Bastion and heard that wizened old voice narrating my motions, I felt a strange sensation. Bastion has something that a lot of recent “artsy” games don't: both style and substance. The game itself is fun, challenging and addictive thanks to it's simple and easy to pick up gameplay. ".you almost feel like you didn't want it to end in the first place, and it wasn't just because of that welcoming old voice or the awesome visuals. Il modo più semplice per scaricare torrent. The character model graphics aren't great by any means for a "next-gen" game, though I feel this fault is minor compared to the rest. It just feels unnecessary and you don't feel like a "badass" as the enemies themselves aren't challenging. When I reached the end, I still had plenty of Augs I could have unlocked but chose not to as I wanted to see how the next stage of the game panned out so I could make the best choice, and that shows another huge problem - I'd reached the end of the game on the hardest difficulty and basically used no Augs other than the "passive" ones such as strength, hacking, smart vision etc. It's purely there to set you up for the next installment, but it seems to reek of a game rushed to market uncompleted. But no, the end is sudden, abrupt, presents you with no meaningful decision in comparison to previous games, and leaves you with a huge feeling of indifference. I reached the end of the game feeling as if I was half way through, and during the final cutscene I felt it was setting up for the next act. You reach what turns out to be the end of the game, and still aren't sure why this person or this plan is that big a deal.Īnd that's the main fault of the game - its length. Speaking of immersion, various characters are introduced, supposedly ones that seem to be important and will play a big part in the game, and they are then barely in it or explained who they are and why they're a big deal or why they have their vested interests. Considering previous games take you to Asia, Paris, secret labs, underground labs, Area 51 etc, this dearth of environments really affects the immersion of the world. Other than that, there's three (3!) other areas that you visit (4 if you count the tutorial), and they're relatively short. The downside is, however, that most of the game takes place in one city, although it does change a bit later on in the game. Most of the game is set in Prague, and the creators have done a good job bringing the city to life and the atmosphere of segregation and suspicion of augmented citizens is well done. Sadly, Mankind Divided seems a step backwards in almost every area, but the main failure is in the story itself. The combat has never been great, though you can forgive this as the series excels in so many other areas, and for a game based around choices the option is still there if you want it. Had really high hopes for this following on from Human Revolution, which had excellent world building, characters, locations, and of course the gripping and paranoid story that Deus Ex is known for. It's a good game overall, with plenty of replayability value, and I am satisfied with my purchase, but I really wish they had dedicated less budget to fancy cutscenes and take down animations, and more to crafting a fully fleshed story with more explorable areas. Mankind Divided on the other hand is mostly set in just one city, Prague, with only two brief exceptions (or three, if we're being generous and counting the introduction), all of which are single-building combat missions with very little to offer in the way of exploration, NPCs and side quests. The relative dearth of explorable areas also feels somewhat disappointing: the first Deus Ex took the player from New York to Hong Kong, Paris, an underwater lab and Area 51, and even Human Revolution had more variety, as the main quest took you from Detroit to Shanghai. Unfortunately though, a couple of issues give the distinct feeling that this game was willfully sold in an unfinished state to pressure players into purchasing future DLCs: Mankind Divided does not even attempt to wrap up the plot, leaving many questions unanswered and, in fact, raising even more questions with the final cut scene. The game is fun and enjoyable: with the usual abundance of air ducts, hackable terminals and hiding spots that one has come to expect from this franchise, the player always has several paths to choose from, and the satisfactory amount of weapons and augmentations gives even more freedom to take a creative approach to problem solving. |
